Since 2014, the coins of The Shēngxiào Collection have celebrated each animal of the lunar calendar in turn. A fusion of British craftsmanship and Chinese tradition, each release is highly anticipated.

The latest edition of the Shēngxiào collection from the Royal Mint is Lunar Year of the Rat 2020. This collection, which combines centuries of Chinese tradition with British coinage, celebrates 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac or Shēngxiào and their unique features and characteristics.

The legend tells of the Great Race among all the animals that decided the order of the lunar calendar. The target is on the other side of the river, but the rat has a plan to ride the cow before he jumps to get ahead and win.

Following the success of The Shēngxiào collection, we are excited to unveil a new gold coin from the series designed by artist P. J. Lynch. Winning the race is Rat, the first sign of the Chinese zodiac, since it starts again in 2020. People born in this sign are said to be intelligent, adaptable and optimistic.
